I. Reading (60 marks)
Text 1
Read the following text and answer the questions by circling a, b, c or d. (3 marks each question)
Making a backyard mud or clay oven like the “tanoor” is a great
family project, and once completed, you will be able to make
fantastic breads, “harees” or grilled fish. In order to build such an
oven you need sand, mud, firebricks, newspaper and water.
Step 1. To start, you need to mix 1 bucket of clay with 4 buckets of
sand. Then add water to make thick mud. After that, add straw and
mix. Keep adding straw until the mixture is no longer sticky.
Step 2. Make a fireproof base for your oven. A good base is a layer
of rocks. Then lay about 8 inches of mud on top of the rocks. For
the floor, lay 4 inch-thick firebricks on top of the mud.
Step 3. To build the oven, put a pile of sand on top of the firebricks
and add water, as needed, so it will stick together. When it is dome-
shaped, cover it with wet newspaper.
Step 4. Lay about 4 inches of mud on top of the newspaper. Shape
the top of the mud layer inwards as you go up, and press the mud
together tightly. Don’t worry about the doorway. You will cut this
later.
Step 5. When the mud is completely dry, cut a hole where the
doorway will be and start removing the sand as it is easy to take it
away. Stop when you reach the newspaper layer. Remove the rough
edges of the doorway so it becomes smooth and even. The height of
the doorway should be 65% of the height of the oven, so as to allow
enough airflow into the oven.
Step 6. When ready to use, light a big fire in the oven, and let it
burn for a few hours. Sweep out all the ash, wait for about half an
hour and your oven is ready.

Imaginary worlds or virtual worlds are computer-based environments. Here you can
create a realistic, digital image of yourself and then interact and socialize with others.
Virtual worlds offer key opportunities for enrichment in the training, education,
medical and business sectors.
For example, in a virtual world, a student who studies design can walk into a room,
put furniture in it and get a real sense of space. The student can also change the
environment with colour and furniture. In many areas, few classroom experiences can
offer the same level of reality.
Just as in the real world, there’s good and bad in virtual worlds. This does not mean
there is no value in experiencing some of the risks of life in an online environment.
Protective behaviour is essential. Learners should know what personal information
not to give out. They should also know how to respond when asked for personal
details. These skills are a must in today’s technological world.
However, there are some ugly aspects to any virtual world. There is a belief that
virtual worlds attract a higher number of criminals than what exists in real life. This
is probably true. This is because there is a risk of coming into contact with unwanted
images or individuals in most interactive online environments. Another aspect is the
high cost. Kids may need to spend much money on decorating their virtual worlds,
because some items like high fashion clothes need to be bought online.
The only way to get away from this is to provide all users with protective strategies,
such as the ability to determine what is right and when to turn the computer off. This
is a role educators must take very seriously.

Speak without Fear
تحدث دون خوف
The biggest problem most people face in learning a new language is their own fear. They worry that they won’t say things correctly or that they will look stupid so they don’t talk at all. Don’t do this. The fastest way to learn anything is to do it – again and again until you get it right. Like anything, learning English requires practice. Don’t let a little fear stop you from getting what you want.
أكبر مشكلة تواجه الناس في تعلم اللغة الإنجليزية هي الخوف من الوقوع في الخطأ أثناء التحدث .. الخوف يكون من نطق الكلمات بشكل صحيح .. أو أنهم يتوهمون أنهم أغبياء إذا أخطأوا في النطق .. مما يدفعهم لعدم التحدث مطلقاً ..
لا .. لا تفعل هذا .. أسرع وسيلة لتعلم الشيء هو القيام بمحاولة لتعلمه .. مرة و أخرى حتى تصيب الهدف .. ومثل أي شيء آخر .. تعلم اللغة الإنجليزية يتطلب التطبيق .. لاتدع مخاوفاً قليلة توقفك عن ما تريد تحقيقه .

Even if you study English at a language school it doesn’t mean you can’t learn outside of class. Using as many different sources, methods and tools as possible, will allow you to learn faster. There are many different ways you can improve your English, so don’t limit yourself to only one or two. The internet is a fantastic resource for virtually anything, but for the language learner it’s perfect
حتى لو كنت طالباً في مدرسة لتعليم اللغة الإنجليزية , فإن هذا لا يعني أنك لا تستطيع تعلم اللغة من وسائل و أماكن أخرى .. استعمال العديد من المصادر والطرق والوسائل بقدر المستطاع سيجعل تعلم اللغة يكون بشكل أسرع ..
هناك الكثير من المصادر يمكنك أن تطور لغتك الإنجليزية من خلالها .. لذلك لا يتوجب عليك أن تحصر نفسك في مصدر واحد أو أثنان فقط .. الإنترنت على سبيل المثال مصدر رائع عملياً .. وبالبنسبة لدراس اللغة يعتبر مصدر مثالي.

حاصر نفسك باللغة الإنجليزية
The absolute best way to learn English is to surround yourself with it. Take notes in English, put English books around your room, listen to English language radio broadcasts, watch English news, movies and television. Speak English with your friends whenever you can. The more English material that you have around you, the faster you will learn and the more likely it is that you will begin “thinking in English
الطريقة الأفضل على الأطلاق لتعلم اللغة الإنجليزية هي أن تحاصر نفسك بها .. سجل ملاحظاتك باللغة الإنجليزية , ضع كتباً إنجليزية في غرفتك , استمع إلى إذاعات تتحدث اللغة الإنجليزية , شاهد الإخبار باللغة الإنجليزية , الأفلام والقنوات التلفزيونية باللغة الإنجليزية , تحدث باللغة الإنجليزية مع أصدقائك كلما أتيحت لك الفرصة , وكل ما حولك عبر عنه بهذه اللغة .. ستتعلم بشكل سريع ومن المحتمل أنك ستجد نفسك تستخدم اللغة حتى أثناء التفكير .

استمع إلى أصحاب اللغة الأصليين
There are some good English teachers that have had to learn English as a second language before they could teach it. However, there are several reasons why many of the best schools prefer to hire native English speakers. One of the reasons is that native speakers have a natural flow to their speech that students of English should try to imitate. The closer ESL / EFL students can get to this rhythm or flow, the more convincing and comfortable they will become
هناك الكثير من معلمي اللغة الإنجليزية الذين تعلموها على أساس أنها لغة ثانية لهم قبل أن يستطيعوا تدريسها .. على كل حال , هناك عدة أسبا تجعل المدارس تُفضل استجلاب مدرسين من أصحاب اللغة الأم منها , أنهم يتحدثون بإنسيابية طبيعية مما يجعل الطلاب يقلدونهم مما يجعلهم يصلون إلى هذه الإنسيابية بشكل مريح .

Watch English Films and Television
مشاهدة الأفلام الإنجليزية والتليفزيون
This is not only a fun way to learn but it is also very effective. By watching English films (especially those with English subtitles) you can expand your vocabulary and hear the flow of speech from the actors. If you listen to the news you can also hear different accents.
هذه ليست طريقة مسلية فحسب , بل أكثر فاعلية وتأثيراً . بمشاهدة الأفلام الإنجليزية خصوصاً ذات العناوين الثانوية البارزة باللغة الإنجليزية , يمكنك أن توسع محصلة الكلمات والإنصات إلى إنسيابية النطق من الممثلين .. إذا أنصتت إلى نشرات الإخبار يمكنك أيضاً أن تسمع لكنات لغوية مختلفة

Listen to English Music
الاستماع إلى الموسيقى
Music can be a very effective method of learning English. In fact, it is often used as a way of improving comprehension. The best way to learn though, is to get the lyrics (words) to the songs you are listening to and try to read them as the artist sings. There are several good internet sites where one can find the words for most songs. This way you can practice your listening and reading at the same time. And if you like to sing, fine.
الموسيقى ممكن أن تكون وسيلة مؤثرة جداً في تعلم اللغة الإنجليزية , في الواقع , أن الموسيقى مستخدمة في تطوير الإستيعاب .. وأفضل وسيلة للتعلم عبر سماع الأغاني هي الحصول على كلمات الأغنية مكتوبة , وقراءتها قبل سماع الأغنية و أثناء ذلك كما ولو كنت المغني .. هناك العديد من المواقع على الانترنت يمكنك أن تحصل من خلالها على كلمات أغلب الأغاني .. بهذه الطريقة يمكنك أن تمرن مهارة الإستماع والقراءة في نفس الوقت .. و إن أحببت أن تغني بنفسك فذلك حسن ..

Do Exercises and Take Tests
قم بالتمارين والإختبارات
Many people think that exercises and tests aren’t much fun. However, by completing exercises and taking tests you can really improve your English. One of the best reasons for doing lots of exercises and tests is that they give you a benchmark to compare your future results with. Often, it is by comparing your score on a test you took yesterday with one you took a month or six months ago that you realize just how much you have learned. If you never test yourself, you will never know how much you are progressing
الكثير من الناس يعتقدون أن القيام بالتمارين و أداء الإختبارات أمراً ليس مسلياً . على كل حال , بإنهاء التمارين و أخذ الإختبارات يمكنك حقاً أن تطور لغتك . أحد أهم أسباب القيام بالتمارين والأختبارات هو أنها تعطيك فرصة المقارنة بين علاماتك المستقبلية مع العلامات السابقة . مقارنة ما أخذته امس مع ما أخذته قبل شهر او ستة أشهر .. ولتدرك كيف تغير مستواك وكم تعلمت .. إذا لم تقم بإختبار نفسك , لن تعلم مدى استمرارك في تحصيل اللغة

اللغة العربية للصف التاسع
اللغة العربية هي لغة الفرد هي هويته القومية، وهي مسرح تفكيره، ومجال وجدانه … فيجدر بالفرد منا أن ينطقها في المستويات الرسمية سليمة الأداء صحيحة العبارة… ننطقها في لغة تأنف من لهجة السوق – هذه اللهجة التي لا تتجاوز مفرداتها ألف مفردة، كما أن الحروف في هذه تُلفظ بمخارج صوتية متباينة تبعًا للمنطقة الجغرافيـــة.
أقول ذلك، وأنا أعي سلاسة العامية على أسَلات الألسنة – في مخاطباتنا البيتية، وفي فكاهاتنا وفي أغانينا، وفي سرعة توصيلها واتصالها، بل في ضرورتها وحيويتها.
وإن لغة الثقافة لدى أي شعب ترتقي صعدًا ما ارتقت أفكاره، ومبنى الجملة يتطور تبعًا لغنى هذا الشعب ثقافيًا …
أما النحو أساس الإشكال فأرى أن نجرب في دورات مكثفة تدريس المرفوعات والمجرورات فقط فيعرف الطالب المنصوبات بعد ذلك، دون جهد ….على كل هذه التجربة لم تُمرَّر ، ولا نستطيع الحكم على خيبتها مقدمًا …
وأما التراكيب المستجدة فلا أرى غضاضة في أخذ الكثير منها ( مع أن بعضهم يرميها بالركاكة أو يصِمها بالعُجمة)، فكل تركيب نستضيفه هو إثراء للغتنا في بِِنيتها، وخاصة ما كان ضمن المجاز والكناية المعاصرة ….
أسأل نفسي أحيانًا:
لماذا نفتقد المراجع الأكاديمية في المواضيع العلمية باللغة العربية؟
لماذا نفتقد المسؤولية الجماعية أو الرسمية إزاء اللغة العربية؟
من هنا أصل إلى نقطة هامة ، وفي تقديري هي جوهر المسألة : وهي أننا – عامةً – لا نوقّـر لغتنا ، ولا نجلّ أربابها بما يليقون به ، فقد نسمع اللفظ الهزيل الكليل ، وقد نسمع اللاحن تلو اللاحن ( وانتبه في حفلات التأبين – مثلاً ) ، ونمر على ذلك مر الكرام ….بل قد نجد بيننا من يسخر منك إن حاولت أن تنقد لغة هذا الزعيم أو ذاك ، فتصبح أنت الهُـزْأة ، فالسياسيون وشخصيات المجتمع أهم من اللغة وإعرابها…
ولا غرابة إذا رأينا – من جهة أخرى – من يحسن عربيته ويبدع فيها، فلا يحظى بأية مزيــة أو ميزة، وبراعته لا تجديه ولن تجزيه شيئًا …. ثم إن بعض المسرحيات تستخدم ألفاظًا عن سابق قصد – لإثارة السخرية اللاذعة من هذه اللغة الفصيحة، فيظهرونها وكأنها التشدق والتفيهق، وما مثـَّله عادل إمام وقوله "ألححت إصرارًا …وأصررت إلحاحًا" إلا نموذج على ذلك.
إذن ما العمل؟
يقول فاروق شوشة:
"إن لغتنا ظلت عبر القرون الطويلة بفضل انفتاحها المستمر على الحضارات والثقافات واتجاهها الدائم للمستقبل، وإنها كانت تفقد جدتها وحيويتها ونبضها عندما يتوقف انفتاح أصحابها على الجديد – الذي تزخر به حياتهم، وينغلقون على أنفسهم مضغًا واجترارا، وعندما يصبح الماضي هو مثلهم الأعلى المقدس تتجه إليه رؤوسهم، دون أن تتجه إلى حيث الهدف الطبيعي والغاية الأصيلة – المستقبل (لغتنا الجميلة، ص 8)
من هنا يجب أن نحترم لغتنا ونعتز بمكانتها، بحيث يستطيع المراقب أن يلمس مدى النفع إثر الاهتمام بها، ويلمس الضرر إثر التخلي عنها…. فمادة العربية هي مادة وجودنا وقوام حياتنا الروحية، فإذا التزم معلمونا بتدريس موادهم بعربية سليمة ولا غضاضة أن تجنح إلى التسكين ( على طريقة بني ربيعة ) على طريقة " سكِّن تسلم ! " – ) ولكن بجِد – هذه المرة –، ……يستثنى من ذلك ما كان ضرورة بسبب الوصل والتبعية للكلمة اللاحقة، نحو غرفـــة الصف، فشكل آخر (غرفة) ضروري، لأنه لا يمكن تسكين آخرها …
إن لغة القرآن تدعونا إلى أن ندرس طرق التجديد في اللغة – في القياس والنحت والتوليد والاختصار والاقتراض ……
وإلى أن يتم ذلك أدعو المعلمين (كلاً في مجاله)إلى أن يقترحوا ترجمات لهذه الكلمات الأجنبية التي تغزو بحدة وبتواتر، وأن يستشيروا من يثقون بلغتهم العربية، وأن يتعاونوا مع اللجنة العليا لشؤون اللغة العربية والمجمع اللغوي في البلاد، وفيهما أساتذة يُشهد لهم بالغَـيْرة على اللغة والحرص على رقيها. وكم يحسن أن تكون الألفاظ المقترحة من غير المشترك، إذ كفانا ما لدينا من مشترك وتضاد وترادف ومثنيات لها أكثر من تفسير – كل ذلك في عصر يتطلب الدقة والتحديد والفهم الجامع المانع.
إن لغتنا هي نحن، وكل تغيير فيها يستوجب أولاً تغييرًا منا في الاتجاه وفي الرؤية" ولا يغير الله ما بقوم حتى يغيروا ما بأنفسهم".
